Batch Convert WebP to GIF Offline
The WEBP image format is great for web performance—it offers smaller file sizes with good quality.
But sometimes you may need to convert WEBP files into more widely supported formats like GIF, especially if you’re working with legacy applications or need simple animations.
Fortunately, you don’t need an online converter. With ImageMagick, a powerful cross-platform command-line utility, you can batch convert WEBP files to GIF files entirely offline.
Step 1: Install ImageMagick
ImageMagick is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download the latest version here: ImageMagick Downloads
Once installed, make sure ImageMagick is accessible from your command line:
- Windows: Add the installation path (e.g., C:\path\to\ImageMagick) to your system’s PATH environment variable.
- macOS/Linux: Installation usually makes the magick command available globally.
Step 2: Batch Convert WEBP to GIF
Navigate to the folder containing your .webp files and run:
magick mogrify -format gif *.webp
This command converts all WEBP files in the folder into GIF format, keeping the same filenames but with a .gif extension.
Compatibility Note
Depending on your installation or ImageMagick version:
- You may need to use just mogrify -format gif *.webp (without magick).
- Older versions of ImageMagick use convert instead of magick.
Step 3: Automate with a Batch File (Windows)
If you frequently need conversions, you can automate the process with a .bat file:
@echo off
cd /d “C:\path\to\webp\files”
magick mogrify -format gif *.webp
pause
Save this as convert-webp-to-gif.bat and double-click it whenever you want to batch convert.
Bonus Example: Converting Other Formats
ImageMagick isn’t limited to WEBP → GIF. For example, to convert HEIC files to JPG:
for %i in (*.heic) do magick convert “%i” “%~ni.jpg”
This loops through all .heic files in the folder and converts them to .jpg.
Conclusion
With ImageMagick, batch converting WEBP files to GIF is quick, offline, and customizable. Whether you’re converting a handful of files or automating large batches, this tool saves time and avoids the hassle of online converters.
