While upgrading the mechanical hard drive to a solid state drive (SSD) a client’s HP laptop I discovered that the battery had become bloated. The state of the battery is clearly “no bueno” and I advised the client to remove and replace the battery. Since the client uses the laptop more like a desktop we simply removed it until HP gets the replacement battery back in stock.
After removal I booted the laptop only to discover that HP has a counterfeit checker, much like their ink and toner cartridges. Not a big deal, we simply press the “Enter” key to bypass but it would be annoying if, after each reboot, a key press is required to complete the boot process.
The instructions below should help you permanently disable the HP battery counterfeit notice, Error 601 Warning.
You may have received the following notice upon booting your HP PC:
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.
ENTER – Continue Startup

I’ve even read reports where this alert is triggered when the battery is failing or has failed. In my case, we removed the battery completely.
