Disable HP Battery Counterfeit Notice Error 601 Warning
While upgrading the mechanical hard drive to a solid state drive (SSD) a client’s HP laptop I discovered that the battery had become bloated. The state of the battery is clearly “no bueno” and I advised the client to remove and replace the battery. Since the client uses the laptop more like a desktop we simply removed it until HP gets the replacement battery back in stock.
After removal I booted the laptop only to discover that HP has a counterfeit checker, much like their ink and toner cartridges. Not a big deal, we simply press the “Enter” key to bypass but it would be annoying if, after each reboot, a key press is required to complete the boot process.
The instructions below should help you permanently disable the HP battery counterfeit notice, Error 601 Warning.
Disable HP Battery Alert
You may have received the following notice upon booting your HP PC:
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.
ENTER – Continue Startup
For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup.
I’ve even read reports where this alert is triggered when the battery is failing or has failed. In my case, we removed the battery completely.
To disable the battery replacement warning message on all HP laptops following the instructions below:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Take out your battery and unplug your power cord from the laptop.
- Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
- Put your battery back in and plug in your power cord.
- Boot your laptop to see if the battery warning message appears.
Note. If this message reappears your battery should be replaced.
Other potential solutions include updating the BIOS of your laptop or using a different compatible charger.
If the BIOS is not updated follow the link to download and install the latest BIOS updates from the HP support website.
