Fix Missing PaperPort Image Printer 64-bit
Despite my recommendation to clients to use the built-in Scan to PC feature (available on most modern all-in-one printers) and manage documents through Windows File Explorer, some insist on using PaperPort 14.
PaperPort, now owned by Tungsten Automation (previously by Nuance and then Kofax), has changed hands multiple times.
PaperPort suffers from a number of issues, one of which is the failure to reinstall the PaperPort Image Printer on Windows 11.
In this post, I’ll walk you through successfully reinstalling the PaperPort Image Printer which was provided to you along with your Brother printer.
Step 1: Uninstall Software & Drivers
Before proceeding, we’ll need to fully uninstall the associated Brother printer software. Do so from the Brother Utilities tool.
Next we’ll need to uninstall the Kofax software, visit Settings > Apps > Installed apps. There should be two instances of Kofax PaperPort apps and one PaperPort Image Printer app.
Once removed open File Explorer and visit the following directories to remove any references of Brother, Kofax, or Nuance.
- Program Files
- Program Files (x86)
- ProgramData
- Users/%profile%/AppData/Local
- Users/%profile%/AppData/LocalLow
- Users/%profile%/AppData/Roaming
Then, clear out temporary files:
- Press Windows + R, type %temp%, and press Enter. Select and delete all files in this folder.
- Press Windows + R again, type C:\Windows\Temp, and press Enter. Select and delete the contents here too.
If some files can’t be deleted, that’s normal—they’re likely in use by active programs. Alternatively you can use these built-in tools:
- Settings: Go to Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, select what you want to remove, and click Remove files.
- Disk Cleanup: Search for “Disk Cleanup” in the Start menu, select your drive (usually C:), check Temporary files (and optionally Recycle Bin, Windows Update Cleanup, etc.), and run the cleanup.
If some files can’t be deleted, that’s normal—they’re likely in use by active programs.
Finally, visit Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Under Related settings locate Print server properties. Select the Drivers tab and completely remove any PaperPort or Kofax related printer drivers.
Step 2: Reinstall PaperPort Software
Before reinstalling PaperPort you’ll want to have restarted your computer. Do not use Shutdown, use Restart.
Once restarted, you may use the Brother Printer Installation Software to reinstall your Brother printer and PaperPort software.
Upon completion, the PaperPort Image Printer should be fully reinstalled and available for use.
Better Alternative PaperPort Solution
Instead of relying on third-party software, consider this streamlined setup:
- Configure your printer to scan directly to your PC as PDF files.
- Use Windows File Explorer to view and manage your documents.
- Adjust the thumbnail size to your preference—no extra software required.
This approach is considerably faster, more stable, and integrates seamlessly with Windows 11.
