How to Open EPS Files Created in Newer Version of Illustrator

Converting an EPS File to Adobe Illustrator

We recently had a client send us their company logo in EPS file format. Normally this isn’t an issue, except the file was created on a newer version of Adobe Illustrator. When we attempt to open the file we receive the following error message:

Can’t open the illustration. The file was generated by a newer version of Illustrator and cannot be opened. Please resave it in a format compatible with your version of Illustrator.

Annoying, to say the least. The good news is that we, potentially, have a work-around.

Open EPS Files Created in Newer Version of Illustrator

  • Begin by opening your Adobe Illustrator application.
  • Create a new, blank, file.
  • Locate and drag the EPS file icon into your Illustrator application and drop it onto the blank (white) canvas.
  • The graphic should appear with little to no alterations to the original artwork. Save the file in a format suitable to your needs.
